In June 1965, as Johnson assured the American people that there was no change in his strategy, the Department of Defense announced it was sending 20,000 new troops to Vietnam. In response, the award-winning editorial cartoonist Herbert Block published the following cartoon questioning Johnson’s credibility. A month after the cartoon’s release, Johnson ordered 125,000 additional American troops to South Vietnam, turning the conflict into a large-scale ground war.
