A “Third Sex” In India, the hijra are sometimes called a “third sex.” They include transgender women, intersex people, and men who cross-dress, many of whom do not attempt to pass as female. Many hijra live together in communities in India, and are accepted by society much more than in other countries. In 2014, India’s Supreme Court created a legal “third gender” that includes transgender people and hijra.
