Deindividuation: Anonymity and Reduced Self-Awareness Hats, scarves, and masks heightened the sense of anonymity felt by rioters in Kiev, Ukraine, during the winter of 2014. So did the general chaos on the streets, where throngs of people attacked riot police, damaged buildings and buses, and set fires. Such factors add to the likelihood that people will commit antisocial acts that they would not commit if their identities were known (Morrell & others, 2011).
