Kurt Cobain As leader of the alternative rock band Nirvana, Kurt Cobain seemed to have everything: fame, artistic recognition, wealth, and adulation from both fans and music critics. But Cobain also had a history of troubling episodes of deep depression and had attempted suicide several times. Despite his status as an alternative rock icon, Cobain’s thoughts reflected the negative bias that is common in people gripped by severe depression. In his suicide note, Cobain described himself as “just another miserable, self-destructive death rocker.” Cobain died of a self-inflicted shotgun wound to the head at the age of 27.
