Young Adulthood and Schizophrenia The onset of schizophrenia typically occurs between the ages of 18 and 25. Daniel Laitman, however, was diagnosed at age 15 when he showed symptoms that included the disturbed movements of catatonia and auditory hallucinations. Daniel’s treatment includes both medications and psychotherapy. He also reports benefitting from long-distance running and the unwavering support of his family. Now in his early 20s, Daniel is a college student and a successful stand-up comedian. He has been open about his diagnosis. “I tell people what it is and if they have questions they can ask me. Schizophrenia is a part of me” (Focus on Family Support, 2010).
