Dopamine and Parkinson’s Disease Parkinson’s disease affects approximately 1.5 million Americans, with an estimated 60,000 new cases diagnosed each year. Parkinson’s disease usually affects older adults, but Michael J. Fox was diagnosed with Parkinson’s at the age of 30. To help ease his symptoms, Fox takes medications containing L-dopa, which temporarily increases brain levels of dopamine.
