Singing a Motet
In this fourteenth-century English Psalter, the artist has illustrated the first letter of Psalm 96—which begins “O sing to the Lord a new song”—with a depiction of three clerics singing a motet. Its words and musical notation are written on a scroll draped over a lectern. (Illustration from the Howard Psalter and Hours, c. 1310–1320 / British Library, London, UK, Bridgeman Images.)
