Atrocities in Antwerp

The sixteenth-century Netherlandish artist Franz Hogenberg produced this engraving of the Spanish Fury in Antwerp not long after the events took place. It shows the kinds of atrocities—rape, murder, pillage, and burning of houses—that would be committed repeatedly on both sides of the conflict between Catholics and Protestants. (akg-images.)
