Eugène Delacroix, Massacre at Chios (1824)
More than any other painter associated with romanticism, Delacroix focused on dramatic events of his time. Here he shows sick and dying Greek civilians about to be massacred by the Turks. He aims to elicit sympathy for the Greek campaign for independence, a cause that had many followers in France and the rest of Europe. (Oil on canvas by Ferdinand Victor Eugène Delacroix [1798–1863] / Louvre, Paris, France / Giraudon / Bridgeman Images.)
