Protesting Reform amid Economic Crisis
By 2010 and 2011, global economic crisis and the attempts to repair the damage had led to massive government debt. To remedy the situation, governments cut back on jobs, benefits, and services while giving banks and businesses huge bailouts. Here, on the island of Cyprus, unions and NGOs sponsored this demonstration against the policy of simultaneously heaping money on banks and taking it from ordinary citizens.
