Histone deacetylation can turn off gene transcription
Recruitment of a repressing complex leads to repression of transcription. In the presence of glucose, GAL1 transcription is repressed by the Mig1 protein, regardless of the presence of Gal4 at the UAS. Mig1 binds to a site between the UAS and the promoter of the GAL1 gene and recruits the Tup1 repressing complex, which recruits a histone deacetylase, turning gene transcription off.
