Myths

Andy Warhol

Born in Pittsburgh, Andy Warhol (1928–1987) was an American artist who was as well known for his persona as he was for his work. He created paintings, prints, and films and was a leading figure in the pop art movement. Warhol is famous for his silkscreens and paintings of American manufactured products such as Campbell’s Soup and Coca-Cola, as well as American celebrities such as Elizabeth Taylor and Marilyn Monroe. The painting presented here is part of the Emily Fisher Landau Collection, which was bequeathed to New York City’s Whitney Museum. The ten figures in the painting, from left to right, are Superman, Santa Claus, Howdy Doody, Greta Garbo, Mickey Mouse, Uncle Sam, Aunt Jemima, Dracula, the Wicked Witch, and Warhol himself.
