Figure 15.15 Genetic Screening of Newborns for Phenylketonuria A blood test is used to screen newborns for phenylketonuria. Small samples of blood are taken from a newborn’s heel. The samples are placed in a machine that measures the phenylalanine concentration in the blood. Early detection means that the symptoms of the condition can be prevented by putting the baby on a therapeutic diet.
