Figure 40.10 The Trigger for Puberty In a prepubertal individual, the gonads produce sex steroids in small quantities, and because the hypothalamus is highly sensitive to the negative feedback effects of those sex steroids, GnRH production is suppressed. A sudden decrease in the sensitivity of the hypothalamus to this feedback causes increased production of GnRH and the onset of puberty.
