Figure 40.14 Glucose Transporters Are Controlled by Insulin Most tissues of the body depend on insulin to promote the uptake of glucose into cells. Glucose enters cells by diffusion, but that diffusion is facilitated by passive glucose transporters. When insulin binds to receptors on the cell surface, it stimulates the transfer of one type of glucose transporter (GLUT4) from intracellular sequestration to the cell membranes. When insulin levels fall, the glucose transporters are again sequestered intracellularly.
