Transcription factors underlie cell differentiation

During the development of a complex organism from fertilized egg to adult, cells become more and more differentiated (specialized). Differentiation is mediated in many cases by changes in gene expression, resulting from the activation (and inactivation) of various transcription factors. We will discuss this topic in more detail in Chapter 19. For now, remember that all differentiated cells contain the entire genome, and that their specific characteristics arise from differential gene expression.
