Church organs of Bach’s time were not only the largest and loudest musical instruments in existence; they often numbered among the most beautiful. The ornament on this organ, from a pilgrimage church in southern Germany, seems to complete the tracery on the grillwork in front of it and the designs on the columns to either side.
