CHAPTER 21

Controlling Energy

550

In this chapter, you will study

  • exothermic reactions of metals and metal compounds

  • the energy it takes to extract pure metals from compounds

  • how chemical change is converted into electrical energy

  • combinations of reactants that make useful batteries

Fires are not the only source of energy resulting from chemical change. Energy from all types of reactions can be made useful. Reactions involving metals and metal compounds are particularly valuable sources of energy. Using certain techniques, these reactions can be made portable, controllable, and safe. This chapter of Unit 5: Fire focuses on ways in which the energy from chemical change is contained and made easily available.
