Punishment of AdulterersA man and a woman found guilty of adultery are led naked through the streets in this thirteenth-century French manuscript, preceded by heralds blowing horns and followed by men carrying sticks. This procession may be driving the couple out of town; banishment was a very common punishment for a number of crimes, including theft and assault.
