How did the Romans build a Mediterranean empire?

AAS THE REPUBLICAN GOVERNMENT WAS DEVELOPING, Roman territory continued to expand. Unlike Alexander the Great, the Romans did not map out grandiose strategies to conquer the world. Roman SchoolIn this carved stone relief from the second century C.E., a teacher makes a point to two older students who have scrolls in their hands, while a younger student enters. Roman methods of education developed in the late republic continued in the empire and spread to the provinces. This relief comes from Neumagen, a town in what is now Germany that was founded by the Romans. (Rheinisches Landesmuseum, Trier)
