Roman School In this carved stone relief from the second century C.E., a teacher makes a point to two older students who have scrolls in their hands, while a younger student enters. Roman methods of education developed in the late republic continued in the empire and spread to the provinces. This relief comes from Neumagen, a town in what is now Germany that was founded by the Romans. (Rheinisches Landesmuseum, Trier, Germany/Giraudon/The Bridgeman Art Library)
