Nation Building in Italy, Germany, and the United States

FOCUS QUESTION How did conflict and war lead to the construction of strong nation-states in Italy, Germany, and the United States?

Louis Napoleon’s triumph in 1848 and his authoritarian rule in the 1850s provided the old ruling classes of Europe with a new model in politics. Would the expanding urban middle classes and even portions of the working classes rally to a strong, conservative national state that promised economic growth, social benefits, and national unity, as in France? This was one of the great political questions in the 1850s and 1860s. In Europe, the national unification of Italy and Germany offered a resounding answer. In the United States, nation building marked by sectional differences over slavery offered another.
