Nasser Opens an Oil Refinery The charismatic Egyptian president inaugurates an oil refinery outside Cairo on July 25, 1956. The next day Nasser announced the nationalization of the Suez Canal, in order to fund the construction of the Aswan Dam after the United States and Britain had withdrawn their financial support. This set off the Suez crisis, a key event in the history of postwar decolonization.
