Lech Wałęsa and Solidarity An inspiration for fellow workers at the Lenin Shipyards in the dramatic and successful strike against the Communist leaders in August 1980, Wałęsa played a key role in Solidarity before and after it was outlawed. Here he speaks at a protest rally in the port city of Gdansk during the strike. Members of the crowd hold flags with the Polish national eagle and the red and white Solidarity banner. Wałęsa personified the enduring opposition to Communist rule in eastern Europe.
