Document 1.3: Tassel with Pierced Round Disc

Not all of the objects found with the Iceman were strictly utilitarian. This decorative tassel, for example, served no practical purpose. Nonetheless, considerable craftsmanship and attention to detail are evident in its construction. In particular, the small stone disc reflects the skill and care the Iceman’s people devoted to such objects. Almost perfectly round with two small, clean holes, the disc was produced by someone who valued its aesthetic qualities. As you examine the tassel, ask yourself why the Iceman’s people would have devoted so much energy to producing decorative objects. What does this tell you about their culture and their values?

Questions to Consider

  1. How would you explain the Iceman’s decision to bring a decorative object with him on what turned out to be his final journey?
  2. Does the tassel change the way you imagine the Iceman and his people? If so, in what ways?
