TThe Shang campaigned constantly against enemies in all directions. To the west of the Shang were the fierce Qiang (chyang). Between the Shang capital and the Qiang were the Zhou (joe). In about 1050 B.C.E. the Zhou rose against the Shang and defeated them in battle. Their successors maintained the cultural and political advances that the Shang rulers had introduced.
