JOAN DIDION’S two essay collections—Slouching Towards Bethlehem (1968) and The White Album (1979)—are considered iconic pieces from the new journalism movement. Both books detail and analyze Didion’s life in California, where she experienced everything from the counterculture movement in San Francisco to encounters with members of the Black Panther Party, the Doors, and even followers of Charles Manson.
