Experts have used a variety of approaches to understand how the media work and what influence they have on our lives—in other words, to strengthen our media literacy. These approaches include the linear model of mass communication (which focuses on the communication process), the cultural model (which views mass communication as a cultural characteristic and uses anecdotal evidence to interpret media), and the social scientific model (which uses data gathering and analysis).
