Cell Phones, Mobile Video, and WiMax

Creating mobile video for cell phones is one of the goals of emerging technology like WiMax.

Changes in how visual content is delivered have forced broadcast TV and cable to further reinvent themselves to remain relevant. Consider the expanding capacities of the cell phone—we can now download music, TV programs, and movies to cell phones as easily as to laptops. In addition, wireless technology called WiMax (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) conveys data over long distances through traditional cell-phone connections as well as by linking mobile phones to traditional mass media. In 2008, major cable, phone, and Internet companies all began talks to create a U.S. wireless network to link computers, televisions, and cell phones using WiMax technology. For some companies in the wired cable industry, a WiMax deal would provide a wireless strategy for competing against DBS systems.
