FIGURE 1.28 Weeks of protests in Warren County, North Carolina, in 1982 over plans to deposit thousands of tons of soil contaminated with toxic material in a landfill resulted in arrests of more than 500 protestors. The protest garnered national attention and inspired an international movement with the goal of working toward environmental justice for all people.
