FIGURE 11.3 Toxicologists generally categorize toxic substances as either toxins, which are produced by organisms other than humans, or toxicants, which are produced by humans or as a by-product of human activity. For example, the toxic substances produced by venomous snakes are toxins, whereas the highly toxic dioxins produced during the open burning of plastics are toxicants.
