PHYSICAL SOURCES OF POLLUTION
image
FIGURE 13.1 Artificial light can be a source of environmental pollution, that is, “light pollution,” in certain contexts. For example, lights near the nesting beaches of sea turtles can stimulate newly emerged hatchling sea turtles to move inland, to their deaths, rather than toward the reflection of the sea. Similarly, disturbing sounds may be a source of “noise pollution” that can cause stress in humans and interfere with wildlife, from birds to whales.
