We have emphasized three general requirements for complex multicellular life: Cells must stick together; they must communicate with one another; and they must participate in a network of genetic interactions that regulates cell division and differentiation. Once these are in place, the stage is set for the evolution of specialized tissues and organs observed in plants, animals, and other complex multicellular organisms.
