To use sunlight to power the Calvin cycle, the cell must be able to use light energy to produce both NADPH and ATP. In photosynthesis, light energy absorbed by pigment molecules drives the flow of electrons through the photosynthetic electron transport chain. The movement of electrons through the photosynthetic electron chain leads to the formation of both NADPH and ATP.
