1.

1. Moving back in time from today, which species are the most likely to be the direct ancestors of modern humans? Which are not? Why?

We are of the species Homo sapiens, which has Homo heidelbergensis as an ancestor, which may have Homo ergaster as an ancestor, which may have Homo habilis as an ancestor, which may have Australopithecus (gracile) as an ancestor, which may have Ardipithecus as an ancestor. We seem less likely to be direct descendants of Homo neanderthalensis and Australopithecus (robust), which are dead-end branches that split off from our common ancestors and became extinct.
