Persuasive Speaking

Printed Page 189

To persuade is to advocate, to ask others to accept your views. The goal of persuasive speaking is to influence audience members’ attitudes, beliefs, values, and actions (see Chapter 6). Some persuasive speeches attempt to move the audience’s attitudes and values closer to the speaker’s stance. Others aim for a more explicit response, as when urging listeners to donate money for a cause or to vote for a candidate.
