Calculate total carbohydrate to fiber ratio. The American Heart Association recommendation is to look for products with a total carbohydrate-to-fiber ratio of less than 10:1.
Step 1. Find the total number of grams of carbohydrate on the label (23g), as well as the grams of fiber (5g).
Step 2. Write the expression as 23:5, then divide the first number by the second to get the ratio. In this case the ratio is 4.6 to 1.
