CALCIUM

One nutrient that is often underconsumed by adolescents is calcium, which helps support bone growth and mineralization. The RDA for this mineral is set at 1,300 mg for 14- to 18-year-olds, decreasing to 1,000 mg at age 19. However, nutritional surveys indicate that many girls and young women do not meet this requirement. For example, one cup of milk provides 300 mg of calcium, but most young adults consume just one cup of milk a day, as they replace the milk frequently consumed in childhood with sugar-sweetened beverages such as sodas. And intake of other calcium-rich foods, like leafy greens, may be lacking as well.
