FIGURE 4.35 Scandinavia and heavy metal music. Riding a decades-long Scandinavian obsession with heavy metal music, the Finnish band Apocalyptica, composed of three cellists and a drummer, formed in Helsinki in 1993. Originally a tribute band that played covers of the U.S. band Metallica, Apocalyptica has become a pioneer of a more symphonic- and folk-influenced style of metal. Finland, like much of Scandinavia, became a hotbed of heavy metal in the 1980s; the tradition continues today as metal bands, clubs, and even metal-based church services grow in popularity.
