Reflecting on Your Writing

Reflecting on Your Writing

Self-reflection is important in assembling a writing portfolio. First, it comes into play when you determine which pieces of writing to include and, possibly, how to revise them. Furthermore, many instructors require an additional piece of writing—sometimes called a reflective letter—that comments on the portfolio as a whole. E-portfolio systems such as the Bedford e-Portfolio let you easily collect, select, and reflect on your coursework. The reflective letter or statement you write provides you with a nice record of accomplishments and a clear outline of what writing skills need further improvement in the next semester. For the instructor, the reflective letter or statement shows whether or not the student has learned to identify his or her own strengths and weaknesses as a writer.
