Introduction to Active Reading

Active reading is closely connected to critical reading, which helps you uncover an author’s main idea and point of view. In active reading, you engage the text, asking questions about and taking notes on what you read.

When you take an active role in the reading process, you deepen your understanding of the text and improve your ability to remember key ideas. Active reading also helps to prepare you for writing about a text after reading it, whether you are writing a summary or developing your own interpretation.
