Inca Goddess This sixteenth-century Inca effigy depicts a goddess of agriculture clothed in ears of corn and varieties of squash. Over millennia, these foods became staples of the diets of ancient peoples throughout the hemisphere and then, after the arrival of Europeans, throughout the globe. Such ancient American plants were important components of the Columbian exchange between the New and Old Worlds.
