Mel Martinez Melquiades R. (Mel) Martinez left Cuba for the United States in 1962 at the age of fifteen and lived in youth camps and with foster families for six years until his parents arrived. In 2004, he became the first Cuban American elected to the U.S. Senate, where he parted ways with other conservative Republicans to work with Democrats on immigration reform.
