Chief Powhatan In 1612, John Smith published a map of early Virginia that included this drawing of Powhatan, surrounded by some of his many wives, smoking a pipe, and adorned with a feathered headdress. The illustration was almost certainly made by an English artist who had never been to Virginia or seen Powhatan but who tried to imagine the scene as described by John Smith.
