Portrait of Cecilius Calvert Cecil Calvert, Lord Baltimore, served as the proprietor of Maryland from 1633 to 1675. Pictured here with his grandson and an enslaved boy, Calvert lived in sumptuous luxury in England and never set foot in the colony populated mostly by tobacco-growing farmers. Calvert’s descendants eventually moved to Maryland, continued to govern the colony for more than a century, and remain a prominent family today.
