The paragraph and essay models in “Paragraphs vs. Essays in Definition” use one topic sentence (paragraph) and the thesis statement (essay) from the Main Point section in this chapter. Both models include the support used in all definition writing: examples that explain what a term or concept means backed up by details about these examples. In the essay model, however, the major support points (examples) are topic sentences for individual paragraphs.
