Freewriting

Freewriting is like having a conversation with yourself, on paper. To freewrite, just start writing everything you can think of about your topic. Write nonstop for five minutes. Do not go back and cross anything out, and do not worry about using correct grammar or spelling; just write. Here is a student’s freewriting on the topic of getting a college degree:

So I know I want to get a college degree even though sometimes I wonder if I ever can make it because it’s so hard with work and my two-year-old daughter and no money and a car that needs work. I can’t take more than two courses at a time and even then I hardly get a chance to sleep if I want to do any of the assignments or study. But I have to think I’ll get a better job because this one at the restaurant is driving me nuts and doesn’t pay much so I have to work a lot with a boss I can’t stand and still wonder how I’m gonna pay the bills. I know life can be better if I can just manage to become a nurse. I’ll make more money and can live anywhere I want because everyplace needs nurses. I won’t have to work at a job where I am not respected by anyone. I want respect, I know I’m hardworking and smart and good with people and deserve better than this. So does my daughter. No one in my family has ever graduated from college even though my sister took two courses, but then she stopped. I know I can do this, I just have to make a commitment to do it and not look away.
