VARIABILITY

Data sets with a lot of variability are less likely to show significant differences, even if the means are different—there is more of a chance that the two data sets overlap so much that they must be considered part of the same population.

SAMPLE SIZE IS IMPORTANT

Small sample sizes are less reliable because, due to sampling error, we may have inadvertently sampled mostly unusual subjects; this would give us an incorrect picture of the entire population.
