MUNICIPAL SOLID WASTE At 777 kilograms per capita (in 2008), Canada ranks 18th out of 29 Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) nations—developed and developing democratic states with free market economies—in terms of amounts of municipal waste produced annually. Although municipal solid waste makes up only 3% of total waste produced here, it is the type of waste we can most directly impact with our individual day-to-day choices. Residential waste production continues to rise in Canada, but so do municipal recycling and composting programs, which now divert 25% of residential waste from landfills.
