A NEW ENERGY MODEL FOR CENTRAL AMERICA?

Background: The Central American Arc is a chain of volcanoes extending throughout Central America. It is caused by a subduction zone, and massive eruptions have occurred in the past. The countries that the volcanoes are in are all developing nations that are trying to increase their standard of living, which includes providing electricity to all citizens. However, these countries lack fossil fuel resources, so they must import them. In addition, they lack the infrastructure to provide electricity in remote areas.

Case: You are a member of a philanthropic organization that provides expert advice and start-up funds to localities (large and small) in Central America to improve energy facilities and infrastructure. The government of Nicaragua has approached your organization for advice about which types of energy to invest in. Before your organization can make reliable recommendations, you need to gather information about possible sources of energy.

  1. Research possible energy fuel sources for Nicaragua. As you conduct your research, answer the following questions:
    1. What are the typical weather patterns?
    2. What is the topography of the country like?
    3. Where do people live?
    4. What types of fuel are available?
    5. What types of fuels can the country afford, now and in the future?
  2. Answer these same questions for the country of Iceland.
  3. Compare your results for the two countries. Based on your research and comparisons, write a brief report to your organization that details your findings. In your report, make sure to include answers to the following questions:
    1. What recommendations should your organization make to the Nicaraguan government for both short-term and long-term solutions to the problem of energy resources?
    2. Do your recommendations apply to the country as a whole, or do you have region-specific recommendations?
